The journey into the Rosemond kingdom was hot and dry.  The higher they went up the plateau’s side, the hotter it seemed to get.

Many of those from the Midlands were used to the plains.  Some had been in the Silver Spire Mountain foothills on a mission or on the sides of the old volcano in the North.  This was not like the foothills or the gentle slope of the volcano.  There were resting inns every few miles on the ups and downs, the switchbacks, and just steep places.  They were needed.

The horses were unhitched from the carriages and walked some to keep them from cramping up before letting them have water and feed.  The people also needed to move, both the ones who had been on the horses and the ones who had been confined to the carriages.  Blood was encouraged to flow to places that had been compressed, no one talked to try to keep the pressure headaches at bay.

It wasn’t just the Midlanders who were having problems.  Many of the military escort were used to being at sea level.  The thinner air and the hotter temperatures were hitting them hard with the formal armor and helmets they all wore.  Laun did not envy them.

Laun had been able to take the horse she had spotted at the first inn and had been able to ride him.  Lieutenant Beau had tried to explain to the Rosemond Lieutenant that she was going to do it, without his opposite listening.  Laun kept her military clothing on, looks from the Rosemond Regulars changing from patronizing and haughty to amazed and accepting when Laun rode amongst them without complaint, and without taking the rein of the horse.  She had picked out one of the dark hides that showed lineage from the other continent, and had seen the reaction to a subtle click and hand signal showing it was Kells Arena trained.

Edgar had been offered a horse and he accepted it on the first leg of the trip.  Gems girl started to fuss with the pressure changes and Edgar was the only one who could comfort the child enough to keep her quiet, making it almost impossible for him to ride.  He stepped out of the carriage with the child in his arms, Gem right behind him when the group stopped at the next inn.  The carriage next to theirs was the one with Lady Engrid which was unloading at the same time. »Read More

The Slave Assassin Chapter 2

Back to Chapter one - The beginning of The Chronicles of the Midlands is in The Slave Warrior.

The four masted ship blocked the small harbor.  There was no way the Rosemond ships could get out.

A smaller boat came to the ‘Twilights Gold’ and tied off to the ring next to the rope ladder that had been thrown off the edge.  A hand up and the man was face to face with several dark green dressed men.  He had seen the name on the ship and spoke in the Midlands tongue, only a slight accent to be heard.

“I am Captain Chandrey of the Royal ship ‘Barh Wada’.  Why are you blocking this harbor?”

There were a few looks between the men facing the Captain.  One stepped aside and a smaller figure dressed in Midlands military garb came forward.  The Captain blinked as he heard a feminine, soft voice come from under the sharp cap.

“We are looking for the ship that is taking her Excellency to the mainland.”

It might have been soft, but the tone said much. »Read More

The calls from the men handling the fenderheads were loud, the clanging of chain and the slap of wet rope filling the air as the KingsArrow came into it’s slip in the Capitol City harbor.  The word had already been passed that the military vessel was coming in, a squad of the Princess’ Fourth waiting on the pier for their namesake.

Laun had been preparing for the docking.  She saw that they had caught up with Pebble’s ship by not taking harbor at night.  The three masted ship was being brought in at almost the same time as the Kings Arrow and Laun wanted to use that.  Verat was not sure how it was going to work, to who’s advantage, but could not say no to his Mistress.

A sharp salute came from the men on the pier.  Laun stood at the top of the gangplank, thanking the Captain-Major for the swift journey before turning and coming to a good attention and salute herself.  The men almost snapped their hands down to their sides as Laun brought down her hand, a big smile on her face.

She saw smiles on many of her men’s faces, too.  She was in full Blacks, the cap with the pin straight and sharp on her head.  Concern went across many faces as they saw Gem helping Hazalam to the gangplank, though hesitating going down herself.  There were calls and signals and the squad were instantly making their hands and backs available where they were needed. »Read More

The Slave Mistress Chapter 19

Back to Chapter 18 - If you are a little lost, start with the beginning of The Chronicles of the Midlands with The Slave Warrior

Two days up the river already and it was going to take at least two more.  Laun was unhappy with the slowness, but she knew it was far quicker than if she had tried to walk, or even ride.

Most of Laun’s time had been spent on the deck of the ship, from dawn to past dusk.  She would do her routines for a few hours in the warming morning, sometimes with Gem, sometimes without.  Hazalam was moving slow, but with the nod from the medics, he was on the journey back North, but not an active servant, or assassin.

The babies had each found favorite places to be, much to the chagrin of the officers.  Ash had found where the rudder was controlled at the back of the ship.  There was a little shelter on the upper deck that Ash had decided was hers, the officers of the watch now watching her as well as the river.  Sable liked the open deck closer to the water and charmed most of the men as the voyage continued.

The KingsArrow was full.  Three extra squads were assigned to protective detail for their Princess and every available space was being used in shifts, except for Laun’s close entourage.  Captain-Major Herrid had escorted Laun to her cabin, apologizing for the cramped quarters.  Laun was in a mood, but did not do what she wanted and drag him into the bunk with her to show him how much room there really was.  She just put a finger along his jaw and said, “If you say so.”  He had stuttered slightly and saluted. »Read More

The sun was about to set in the West, the clouds mostly cleared in that part of the sky and the colors painted on the clouds left above were bright.  The schooner was anchored at a place the men knew well, a small cove created by a stream meeting up with the main river.  It was not exactly hidden from the flow, but it was hard to get to if you did not know where to go exactly.  The wind did not care and brought a coolness to the lingering afternoon heat through the trees that drooped across the cove entrance, a scent of green things and the water on it.

The deck was set for dinner, a table and two chairs and a sideboard that was ready for the food the cook below had prepared.  Liam had asked for Laun to dress formally for dinner and she was glad she had packed the red and black dress, just in case.  It was her best dress, other than the heavy red velvet thing hanging on her arming tree back at Salam-Dir.  She had one blade on her, a small thing hanging off her belt to balance a small pouch, and that was it.  She did not feel as though weapons in this circumstance were a good idea.  Even if she felt more naked without her harnesses and straps than if she was completely naked except for weapons in front of the men on the ship.

Liam took Laun’s hand and kissed it lightly, a raised eyebrow at her lack of crown and jewelry.  Laun thought he was just amused at her choice of clothing, but smiled and let him lead her to one of the chairs.

“I have been told that we have fresh fish and mussels from the river for dinner tonight.”  Liam sat and one of the sailors poured from a wide and flat bottomed decanter into similar glasses.

Laun took her glass and appreciated the thought behind the delicate things that were designed not to tip from the slightly swaying table.  “I am looking forward to it, Liam, though I have to admit that my pregnancy turned me from fish for most of it.” »Read More

The early morning was slightly overcast.  Few people were heading into the Capitol City that morning.  Only one group was on the road out, a few single travelers behind them.

Nesil and Laun rode in silence next to each other, the carriage with Gem, the babies and a few travel cases behind.  There was one soldier with them, the man driving the carriage, but he was dressed in civilian clothes, a cap on his head to cover his shaved head.  Laun was without anything remarkable on her, other than a woman wearing riding leathers, but her baring gave away her status, even with the cap instead of the crown over her hair.  There had been no trouble at the gate and Laun suspected that word had been sent to all the gates to let travelers out without question that morning.

They followed the river downstream along the River Road for more than an hour.  There was a mist that made the overcast morning even grayer, but Laun enjoyed the feeling of the humidity on her skin and the slightly muffled sound of the horses on the gravel of the road.  They came to a wide bend in the road, a smaller track coming off and into a marshy woodland next to the river turning away from the road, or perhaps the other way around.

Liam’s messenger led the way, the newly green trees around them shading the growing morning light from the path.  Grace cantered and tossed her head, not liking the woods, but staying firm under Laun as they followed Nesil. »Read More

The procession from the Manor of the Hawkwell lands was early in the morning, but it was full of more people and ceremony than Laun had expected.  Most, if not all, of the soldiers were in formation and saluted as she passed them on Thunder.  Falmir was beside her on his newly won mount, but it was Laun that the soldiers were acknowledging.

Laun waved to each section of men and they gave a small cheer as she passed.  She was happy it did not happen more than three times.  It made her red, but it also made her grin like an idiot.

They were past the soldiers and almost to the edge of the lands when a halt was called.  The order of the group was changed, Falmir gave his daughter one more hug and they rode on past him.  Laun dropped the lead to the charger and let him follow the other horses.  She felt and let the tears come out as they passed the outer marker of the Hawkwell lands.  She tried to turn to see if she could see anyone or anything behind, but the road curved and it was just low hills and trees behind.

They stopped several times at the whim of Laun’s back and bladder, but made excellent time through the Midlands West of the manor.  Laun had created a map for herself of the route, going through more than ten map folios and Kingdom cartographic histories to do so.  She had shown it to Falmir the night before and told him that was one of the things lacking in the Midlands, accurate maps. »Read More

The Slave Lady Chapter 29

Back to Chapter 28

They had only been on the road for an hour on this stretch and Laun was signaling that she needed to stop again.  The carriage was tossing her from side to side and her back was spasming.

It was not just the carriage that had to stop.  There was the cart with her few things and some of the Palace servants.  There were the military officers on horseback.  There was the company keeping pace behind.  Not just Laun.

It was late afternoon and they had stopped four times already.  They had left from the Rosemond Embassy estate directly into the flow of early morning street traffic.  The Capitol City did not rest for long in the night and even at dawn, there were merchants and townsfolk about.  It had been slow going in the city and Laun had asked for their first stop just a few minutes from the outer gate.  They had met the military escort while Laun paced within sight of the King’s City gate, a curt greeting before the carriage had lurched forward again.

She tried to ride and grit her teeth in the carriage.  She asked if she could ride in the wagon.  She laid in the footwell of the carriage.  Nothing seemed to keep her back from hurting.

This time, they were by a small stream and Laun was trying to pace and stretch to get some relief.  Her feet and legs were fighting her, too.  Her ankles were swollen to the point where she was not sure where her calf really started.  Even with both Gem and Hazalam massaging her, the feet she had did not look like her own. »Read More
