he Autumn had been mild after a hot Summer.  The gardens that Laun was being escorted through showed signs that heat and lack of rain had been hard on the flowers and trees.  Though it was not a delicate bloom that Laun was seeking that afternoon.

There was a small house on the estate in the middle of the gardens.  A few rooms surrounded by well tended shrubs making a maze for those unfamiliar with the paths.  She passed a fountain at one corner, a statue at an intersection and then a bench with the woman that Laun was there to see.

Baroness Fairhaven stood, putting the sewing in her hand by where she had been sitting.  The black dress loosely flowed from her shoulders, the lacings down the front more for show than for fitting.  She held out her hand and Laun took it up, kissing the back of the hand before coming to attention as an officer in uniform Blacks should.  Jessi blushed and waived Laun to her side, starting to walk the rest of the way to the small house.

“My condolences at the loss of your Husband, Baroness.”  Laun’s voice had nothing of sympathy or the sweetness she often heard when others were saying the same words.

Jessi smiled and bowed her head to Laun, saying, “Thank you, your Highness.  It was a blow, but not...unexpected.”  She looked up and the women both had glints in their eyes above the smiles on their lips.

Laun was expected and a small meal was laid out on a small table next to a low, wide couch.  It made Laun smile thinking of what had been done to her on a similar couch, and what she hoped would be happening soon.

The women sat on the couch, Laun taking her leather cap from her head and putting it on a small protrusion from an upright holding the roof over the open area.  Laun took the offered goblet, smiling at the golden liquid.

“I see that you have caught a taste for the Dumonde brew.”

Jessi smiled and Laun saw just a hint of a blush.  “I made the acquaintance of one of the brothers in charge.  He...gifted me with a few casks.”

“All the better for today, Lady.”  Laun looked at her host over the rim of the goblet and they drank at the same time. »Read More

The woman was escorted through the Sand Castle by one of the slaves, the man not used to the dark green tabard newly gifted him.  He pulled on the side of the cloth as he walked in front of the noblewoman.  He stepped to the door of Laun’s bedroom and scratched, opening the door for the noble before going back to wait at the front of the house.

Laun stood and went to her visitor.  Her gold and brown dress flowed from her shoulders, the back open enough to show some of the scaring beneath a sheer veil held to her head by a few pins into her braids.  “Jessi.  I am glad that you made it.  Lucas told me that there have been troubles keeping you from going back to your brother’s mains.  I am preparing to go back to Salam-Dir myself.”

The women embraced as if they were long time friends.  “Laun, the invitation came and I was glad we were still in the Capitol City.”

There were others in the room, talking lightly between them and not raising to leave.  Laun motioned to the chairs by the fireplace and the two women walked to them arm in arm.

Gem was dressed in a dress similar to Launs, the cut and color much more becoming to her blonde hair and light complexion than the dark green and black of her usual garb.  She offered the Lady Jessi a crystal goblet filled with a golden liquid and sat back on the large cushion at Laun’s feet, a children’s book in her hand. »Read More

The glow of the sun on the horizon was all the real light there was on the road.  The way to the tavern was easy to follow with the grasses and shrubs cleared to several leagues from the edge of the gravel road.  Laun had been riding for an hour outside of the walls of the Capitol City, each moment making her just a little more tense.

The Charger under Laun was a good horse.  He was not Thunder, but he followed the motions of Laun’s knees and hands without hesitation.  She was nervous, watchful of the surrounding dark growing around her.  It seemed to be clear, but if she was holding a meeting such as this, she would not have open roads unwatched.

The tavern was huge.  It was several stories, larger on it’s base than the entire inn and greens of Markle and Marie’s place.  There was a large separate structure for the stables, the sound of horses and dogs plain to hear.  Laun directed the charger to the stables and had a flush of fear go through her.

Several large men were standing around the entrance to the stable.  Laun could see glints of brass on some of them, their bells open for those to see who needed to.  Laun moved the charger to one of the step-downs that was there, carefully keeping her dark green hooded cape around her as she dismounted the horse.

“Private gathering.  Fuck off.” »Read More

The Sand Castle was quiet outside the wall.  Inside, military and civilian and slave mixed and mingled and flowed, chaotic if you did not know what the form and flow was.  The gate bell was heard inside and some of the chaos quieted.  The question was said in low tones through the hole, the voice on the other side not having a chance to finish before there was a whoop and the gate started to open.

The front yard was not big enough for all the people who tried to cram in.  Laun had the squad with her and that added twenty to the close to squad number plus mounts already in the gravel area.  Laun had salutes and warriors grips and a few shy kisses as they all crowded in as the gate closed again.

Calls could be heard through the small compound.  Faces appeared at the door, the only one to push through with any success was Disa.  Laun had hands on her, pulling her through the men and into the lamp-lit brightness of the building.

It was as if the Salam-Dir people had drawn lots to see who was to come to the Capitol City.  Hunter was there, waiting until he could get a hug and a kiss before going out to look after Thunder.  Erin was there, Mimi close behind but ignoring the red scarf for the few attentions he could get from Laun.  Silar, dark in dress and skin but bright with his smile, knelt as Laun approached, rising for an embrace and kiss when Laun put her hand on his head.

There were others, mostly waiting in the garden areas.  Lanterns were lit and the small plants had stick walls around them to keep inattentive people from stepping on them.  Laun had a tankard of cold water in her hand and was sitting on one of the benches, surrounded by people before she could really do anything for herself. »Read More

The calls from the men handling the fenderheads were loud, the clanging of chain and the slap of wet rope filling the air as the KingsArrow came into it’s slip in the Capitol City harbor.  The word had already been passed that the military vessel was coming in, a squad of the Princess’ Fourth waiting on the pier for their namesake.

Laun had been preparing for the docking.  She saw that they had caught up with Pebble’s ship by not taking harbor at night.  The three masted ship was being brought in at almost the same time as the Kings Arrow and Laun wanted to use that.  Verat was not sure how it was going to work, to who’s advantage, but could not say no to his Mistress.

A sharp salute came from the men on the pier.  Laun stood at the top of the gangplank, thanking the Captain-Major for the swift journey before turning and coming to a good attention and salute herself.  The men almost snapped their hands down to their sides as Laun brought down her hand, a big smile on her face.

She saw smiles on many of her men’s faces, too.  She was in full Blacks, the cap with the pin straight and sharp on her head.  Concern went across many faces as they saw Gem helping Hazalam to the gangplank, though hesitating going down herself.  There were calls and signals and the squad were instantly making their hands and backs available where they were needed. »Read More

Back to Chapter 18 - If you are a little lost, start with the beginning of The Chronicles of the Midlands with The Slave Warrior

Two days up the river already and it was going to take at least two more.  Laun was unhappy with the slowness, but she knew it was far quicker than if she had tried to walk, or even ride.

Most of Laun’s time had been spent on the deck of the ship, from dawn to past dusk.  She would do her routines for a few hours in the warming morning, sometimes with Gem, sometimes without.  Hazalam was moving slow, but with the nod from the medics, he was on the journey back North, but not an active servant, or assassin.

The babies had each found favorite places to be, much to the chagrin of the officers.  Ash had found where the rudder was controlled at the back of the ship.  There was a little shelter on the upper deck that Ash had decided was hers, the officers of the watch now watching her as well as the river.  Sable liked the open deck closer to the water and charmed most of the men as the voyage continued.

The KingsArrow was full.  Three extra squads were assigned to protective detail for their Princess and every available space was being used in shifts, except for Laun’s close entourage.  Captain-Major Herrid had escorted Laun to her cabin, apologizing for the cramped quarters.  Laun was in a mood, but did not do what she wanted and drag him into the bunk with her to show him how much room there really was.  She just put a finger along his jaw and said, “If you say so.”  He had stuttered slightly and saluted. »Read More

The shuffling of bare feet on the wooden floor barely could be heard above the storm pounding outside the building.  But she had heard it.  Hearing it meant she was awake.

Laun listened to the feet.  One set.  And a slight scrape of metal on wood.  She could smell meat and possibly something sweet.  Liquid was poured into something, a slight sound that reminded her of when wine was poured into crystal.

There was a shifting, a weight on the bed.  Laun felt a pause in the person with her and then a light touch on her shoulder through the blanket.  She smiled and opened her eyes.

Beau was there, looking intently at her.  “You were sleeping soundly when I came back, my love.  I didn’t want to disturb you.”

There was a smile and Laun turned towards the Lieutenant.  “Thank you for letting me sleep.  Though I think it was to keep your own neck intact...”  She reached towards the line she had cut on his neck.

Beau grasped her hand and kissed it.  “My blood is yours, Laun.” »Read More

The wind was not favorable.  The tide was against them.  Clouds told of another storm that would be on them, the headaches and joint pains reported telling of how severe it was going to get.

Laun had a cold cloth over her forehead as she lay on the dirt.  The chair she had been in creaked just enough to set off the pain between her eyes.  Laying on the dirt and tile of the deck was preferable to even that little noise above the constant surf.  She now understood what the headache was, but even the pale yellow concoction that Maddoc gave her had not taken as much edge off as before the last storm pressure change.

A scrape of door frame against the ground made Laun wince.  She looked over and saw boots from under the cloth on her head.  “Ma’am?”

“More messages?”  Laun winced at her own voice, even though the Corporal had to lean down to hear her properly.

“No, Ma’am.  Batten orders were just passed.  You should probably come inside before the shutters are put in place.”  He continued to stand, waiting.

Laun sighed.  She had been trying to get some rest in the sun, warming herself as she fended off the pounding at her temples.  She held her arm up, her hand open and waited for the man to help her up.  He stepped forward, the sand under his boot making enough of a grinding noise to make Laun clench her teeth. »Read More

The servant was not expecting this.  A single officer on a military charger.  No carriage.  No entourage.  No ceremony.  He wasn’t even sure to begin with that this was even the person he was to escort to the Mayor’s side.

“Princess of the Realm, Laun Dresden.”  The servant announced the figure next to him and then backed out of the room.

The Mayor stood from by the fireplace and looked sour.  The sideboard of the room had several open bottles and casks, enough for a score of people and he had only three with him in the room.  He looked behind Laun and did not see anyone else and his sourness deepened.

“Your Highness.  I was expecting more people.”

Laun strode forward and held out her hand to the white haired sycophant.  “You had been asking for me to come.  I took you at your word.”  She barely had a touch of hand or lips from him as he made the ritualized greeting.

He stiffly motioned to the other two people in the room.  “Please, Highness, I would love for you to meet my family.  My wife, Desirh.”

Laun went to the woman sitting in the matching chair that had been artfully put on the other side of the fireplace to show off her matching outfit to her husband.  Laun held out her hand to the woman, the Mayors wife expecting a gentle touch, not the full hand kiss Laun gave her.  “Desirh, you are more beautiful than described.” »Read More

Storms rush across the world, pushing destruction before them.  The calm after a storm can be eerie, the most quiet nature ever gets.

Laun was awake and had more energy than she thought she should have.  She had slept more on then beside the Commander, once they had slept.  The Lieutenant was snoring on the floor, several pillows and a blanket making a slipshod bed for the worn out man.  She listened to them both as she woke, realizing that their snores were the loudest things she could hear.

The storm had passed.  Light was coming around the board over the window, a paleness to it telling her that is was still very early.

She grabbed one of the uniform tunics from the floor and made it to the latrine, not announcing herself and not caring who saw her almost covered butt.  The Guard at her door was the same man as the night before and he watched as she wandered down the hall, a sigh coming from him as she disappeared into the latrine.  The non-commissioned officers in the room turned away from her as she found an empty stall and sat, though many of them knew that she had been part of the sounds they had heard in the night.

Laun was still sensitive from her play with the men the night before.  It was only a few hours since she had collapsed from exhaustion, happily twitching as the Commander held her close.  Laun had a full bladder and had to hold herself still as the urine stream went past things that made her gasp.  Her hands were on the half-walls to either side of her, her lip between her teeth to keep her self from letting more than the first gasp out.

She had to remember to breathe.  It had been intense just to relieve herself.  She wasn’t sure how she was going to be able to go through the rest of the day.  Especially with pants on. »Read More
