Laun was at the front of the small group traveling with her.  She had stopped to make sure she had on a longer tunic, not a dress, with her riding leathers, and her crown on her head as she approached the gate to the Capitol City.  The soldiers on guard turned to her on her palfrey and snapped to attention when they saw the three pointed crown.

“Your Highness!  Welcome back.”  The Sergeant did not relax even after Laun saluted back.

“How is the day, Sergeant?”

He glanced to one of his squad behind him and back to Laun, saying, “Remarkably quiet, Highness.”

“The roads, also.  What do I owe for my-”

He held up a hand and moved to the side.  “Nothing, Ma’am.  Please.”  He motioned and the larger gate was opened for the carriage behind her.  Laun waited as the rest of her group went past, Liam’s messenger following the one officer with them, before Laun turned Grace towards the gate.

Back to Chapter 1 - The beginning of the series starts with The Slave Warrior

“The river is topping the bridge and we are not sure if it is going to last past the next rainstorm.”

The Spring thaw had brought a flood with it that year.  Once the weather had changed, it had stayed warm, the pockets of snow and cold disappearing over a few warm weeks, not the good cool month it usually took.  Hunter and the squad from Nestwood had come back for the almost bi-weekly personnel change with news that was not heartening.

“Well, if the bridge has to go, it has to go.  Or it needs to be properly rebuilt with better foundations that don’t block the river.”  Laun was sitting on a log outside the keep of Salam-Dir, talking with the men who had just traveled two days back to the land.  It was early afternoon and she was reveling in not having to have cape and mittens on.  Or boots.  Her toes were covered with cold mud and she was squishing it around as the men were reporting on the last two weeks.

“After the floods have come down, but I am not sure that we will be able to get across at all if the bridge goes out.”  Hunter was sitting on the log with her, one of his large hands on her leg and a smile on his face, even with the dire news. »Read More

The muffled sounds of snowfall on the thick glass woke Laun, but even though snow meant it was warmer, it did not make her want to get out of bed that early in the morning.  She was surrounded by her Loves and household and she was warm and comfortable.  Her habit of getting up early in the morning to exercise was what had woken her, but she was not willingly moving from the bed that morning.

She was tired of getting up so damnedably early.

There was movement beside her and eyes opened.  The low night lamp made Fount’s grey eyes deep and dark that morning.  The sleepiness was blinked away and Laun could see the smile at the corner of his eyes.

“Good morning, Husband.”

Fount’s hand went between the covers and found her arm.  “Good morning, Wife.”

There was movement and a yawn on the other side of her.  Both Fount and Laun moved as Edgar pulled the blanket back and looked at them in the dim morning light.

“Good morning, my Lord.” »Read More
