The nap happened, in small chunks to begin with.

The babies wanted to be with Laun for a while and that delayed the lay-down.  She was nodding off while the babies were crawling around her on the patio.  Gem helped Laun into her room and took charge of the babies again.

Laun was able to lay back on the bed, not even with her boots off before a messenger from the Hamlis mayor insisted on seeing her.  That took a while to make him stop talking and take a tersely written message back, telling the Mayor that right now was not good, to stop trying to get Laun to move off the compound.

Laun had her boots off, with help from the timid Lieutenant and had just been in process of telling him her rules of the moment and trying to have some negotiations with the man when the medics came in, Maddoc trailing several other red-sleeved soldiers behind him.  She stripped with little hesitation, the scars and recent wounds starting to blend together, the bruises just starting to yellow and fade but were still enough to make the men who had not seen them before to pause.

Salve was massaged into Laun, the back not the only place the healing hands stroked, though none went to where they all seemed to be looking whenever Laun turned her head and caught them.  The consultations on the back strain and the cuts were over after a small delay, Maddoc asking for a little privacy.

Laun was more relaxed and had her torn dark green tunic on, the harness on the left arm the only other thing on her.  She was sitting, though knew that she would be laying down soon, one way or another.  “You went off compound, Sister.” »Read More

Back to Chapter 12 - Interested in the Kinky side of things?  I have some tips in my FAQ

The morning shift assigned to the visiting Princess were all standing in the office area, the door open to the deck.  She was doing katas with her two servants, the blonde being the aggressor in the mock battle, the man mirroring his Mistress as Laun moved against the girl.

They had been practicing for over an hour.  Neither of the assassins were going to say that Laun had just about tired them out.  The extra eyes on them did not help, though Laun did not seem to pay attention to the men waiting for her.

The blade in Gem’s hand slipped, Laun seeing it and stepping differently, going into the blade, blocking with her forearm, the rip of the fabric loud even over the surf below.  Several of the men watching stepped forward in concern and saw Laun take the blonde down to the sand and tile of the deck.

Hazalam was out of the form and at Laun’s side as soon as Gem was on her back.  “Mistress?”

Laun could not talk because of the panting.  Her hands said, “change is good.”  She pulled on Gem’s tunic, the smile of the blonde telling her that it was a good move.  Their lips pressed together briefly and then Laun sat back, trying to catch her breath.

“Fuck me...” the voice was intended to be low, but Alsen could never regulate that about himself.  He pushed through the men around him who suddenly had things to do.  Laun raised a hand but still could not talk.

“I’ve never seen you do forms before, Highness.  I mean, I helped that one morning, but this was fucking amazing to watch.”  Alsen offered an arm and Laun took it, being pulled into a warriors grip and then a hug, their grasped arms still between them.

Gem was up and in Hazalam’s arms, the assassin making sure his love was unharmed.  Laun saw the smiles between them and wondered when they were going to admit to the world what they knew about themselves.  She looked back at the General and smiled.

“Sir, I didn’t know you were up so early.” »Read More

Four rooms.  There was now an office created for Laun from one of the Sergeant’s rooms next to the room she had slept in.  It was being stocked as Laun sat in the reasonably comfortable chair, watching when she was not reading.  Verat stood at her side for some of it, mentioning a few things she may wish to requisition from the compound’s stores.

Laun was liking the word requisition.  It meant she could get almost anything she wished almost instantly.  She did not push it, but had thoughts of going with the men who were sent for things to see what else was available.  But, she did not really need much.

She had the small sheaf of invitations to answer, which she did herself.  One of the men was a scribe, his look not as well covered as he might have wanted as she asked to sit at the desk herself.  Gem had taken the invites when they were sent over and had sorted them as well as she could, not knowing most of the people, but understanding the coded language of the nobles.

Laun said no to each of the invitations.  Each was slightly different as each referenced the missive that had originally been sent.  Laun had the scribe read them over to make sure she had not made horrible mistakes and getting a few small smiles from him as he read her wording to the different nobles.  He left with the messages in hand, intent on delivering them himself.

The swirl of setting up the office, having the men in her staff introduce themselves to have Laun look them up and down, and then the small influx of officers coming in to introduce themselves calmed down.  Laun was tired and starting to become hungry, but did not know if she wanted to make the small journey to the mess hall or not. »Read More

Moving was pain, but it was an all over, constant pain that Laun understood and could push through.  The medics had exclaimed that the ocean salt water had cleaned her wounds as well as they would have with their stinky tinctures, consulting among them about how to get a bath of salt water for her use.  New bandages were put on, almost a full underlayer of gauze beneath the leather and metal undergarment Laun put on beneath her almost military tunic and riding leathers.

She was not going to stay in the room or on the deck that day.  She had energy and a need to see the compound, and find Liam.  There was one of the Commander’s aides waiting in the corridor for Listas that she looked at and smiled at and he could not step away.  Laun thought carefully and both signed and said, “Please escort me?”

He came to attention and motioned down the corridor, leading her by letting her lead.  Hazalam stepped to her back as Gem took charge of the children again, a glance and a smile to the assassin before the small group left the barracks.

There was a small walk to the mess hall, some of the soldiers saluting the higher ranked man at Laun’s side, some recognizing her and saluting Laun.  Today was not to be a sloppy day.  When the salute was to her, Laun made as sharp of a salute back as she could, nodding to the men who saluted the Lieutenant at her side.  Laun asked a few questions of the man, needing answers to simple things, such as where the medical teams were treating Liam. »Read More

The linen beneath her moved with her, stuck to the outside of the tunic as her wounds were stuck on the inside.  The bruises along her ribs were painful to breathe through, the general ache through her body keeping her from forcing herself back into sleep, again.

The small window in the room looking onto the ocean showed that there was a clear sun rising that morning.  A shifting shadow from the guard outside let Laun know that it had been a calm night for the watchers, even as she had been riding her deamons through her dreams.

Laun shifted and peeled herself from the bedding.  She was surprised that she hadn’t been disturbed several times in the night by the medics on staff in the compound.  She would need to get her wounds treated and bandaged again.  But first, there was trying to wake enough to find the privy.

The door into her room opened outward to the morning on the deck, the guard stepping forward around it to see who was there.  “Ma’am?”

“Is there a latrine in the building or do I have to go somewhere else?”

He relaxed a little from his attention stance and motioned into the building.  “Ma’am, if I may-”  She proceeded him into the corridor and to the privy at one end of the building.  He stepped in, chasing out two men before coming out and motioning her in.

It was not fancy, but it had individual benches with some privacy with half-height walls between.  Laun was able to sit and do her business, but her legs refused to work properly for a moment when she tried to get back up.  She had to pull with the wall to steady herself.  She washed her hands in one of the basins, drawing across her face with her wet hands.  She looked in the mirror, cringing at the tired, older face that looked back at her.

Laun led the way back to the room, thanking the men who had been chased out and were still waiting in the corridor.  Laun felt the need for some normalcy and stepped out into the growing morning sunlight to do some morning exercise.

The guards watched as Laun did gentle motions at first, warming up her aching and stiff muscles.  She was trying to find the line between movement and utter pain.  It was surprisingly high, except for the tunic ripping from her wounds a few times.  The most painful part of her body were her nipples, the movement pulling the gold rings through the crusty scab and making her stop moving for a moment as she held her breasts.

Laun stopped halfway through the second go-through of one of the open hand katas.  She felt her body was warm, but also very sore.  And the wounds catching on her tunic was annoying her, beyond the pains and wetness she had from them. »Read More

Back to Chapter 8 - Unsure what is going on?  Start with the first chapter of The Chronicles of the Midlands: The Slave Warrior

The dock had been cleared.  Workmen and fishmongers and sailors were escorted from the area that the ‘Midnight Hour’ had been tied to.  A line of the local guard had to keep the populace back, the crowd getting noisy.  Frightened horses were calmed and brought off the schooner by the shifting gangplank, not the hoist that had brought them aboard.  The medics swarmed onto the ship and two patients were taken off, seemingly under guard, one walking, one not.

Officers gathered around the limping woman being supported by a dark green dressed servant.  The prisoners were taken from the ship, Laun saluting the Major at the head of the squads as the official exchange happened with several medics trying to fuss over Laun’s wounds.  She had a few words with the Major and he stepped away, an eye on the Rosemond soldiers that was cold and hard.

The ship was put under guard, the crew and wounded taken to the military compound on the shore of the Southern Ocean.  Liam was in the care of some of the best medics in the Midlands army, but no one really was hopeful.  Gut wounds were nasty, and Laun put a hand on his forehead as they parted, his fever making him delirious and not knowing who she was.

The Commander of the garrison met them in the yard of the military compound by the non-commissioned officer’s quarters.  He was trailed by several high ranked men, one of which a naval Captain.  The Commander saluted Laun and was pleased that she saluted back, not waived or giggled as many women did. »Read More

The Slave Mistress Chapter 7

Back to Chapter 6

Gem had woken around mid-day, the babies and her Mistress gone.  She found the privy and used it and then went to the deck to try to find her Mistress and take charge of the children.  The children were there, but her Mistress had not been.

A few raised words had come from Gem, but the sailor who had charge of the babies would not say where their mother was.  Sable had reacted badly to Gem yelling and had started to cry.  Ash took up the sound and Gem and the sailor both had a baby in their arms to comfort and quiet.

He had been competent.  They had been fed and cleaned, cloths around them but not the little tunics that had been brought.  Sable liked the sailor and would make her sharp cry if he went more than a pace away, Gem smiling at the sigh the man had.

Some food was brought to Gem by the sailor she had talked to before, a mug of hot tea and some sliced bread with a sweet jam already spread on it.  She smiled and thanked the man, catching that his name was Tom.  She took a sip and then looked at the mug and bread.

She had not tasted the aftertaste of the drug until the sip of tea.  It was subtle, but it was there.  The sailor with the babies avoided her eye.  Tom stepped away and into the shade of the lower decks.  They all knew that she and her Mistress had been drugged.  She put the offered food on the deck and stared at the man Sable had latched onto. »Read More

Back to Chapter 5 - Not sure what is going on?  Start with the beginning of the Chronicles of the Midlands with The Slave Warrior

There was a slight breeze trying to tickle Launs nose through the open porthole early in the morning.  Her bladder was more successful in bringing her awake and Laun could not ignore it when Gem moved and her knee came up and into Laun’s groin.  The blonde was asleep and did not mean to, but it was what made Laun roll from bed.

She had been shown the privy the day before.  They called it the Head, for no known reason.  There was a long tunic near the top of one of the cases that Laun pulled on and the gummy slippers to make her way to where she could relieve herself.

She almost expected the door to the cabin to be locked.  It was not.  Laun made her way through the narrow ways below deck to the privy and used it, her body seemingly with a never ending stream of urine for a count of almost twenty.

Done with that morning ritual, Laun made it to the upper deck and took in the misty light coming to the moving schooner.  The trees on either side of the river seemed very far away and the mist covered them sometimes making Laun think they had traveled to a lake or perhaps the ocean while they were asleep. »Read More

The sun was about to set in the West, the clouds mostly cleared in that part of the sky and the colors painted on the clouds left above were bright.  The schooner was anchored at a place the men knew well, a small cove created by a stream meeting up with the main river.  It was not exactly hidden from the flow, but it was hard to get to if you did not know where to go exactly.  The wind did not care and brought a coolness to the lingering afternoon heat through the trees that drooped across the cove entrance, a scent of green things and the water on it.

The deck was set for dinner, a table and two chairs and a sideboard that was ready for the food the cook below had prepared.  Liam had asked for Laun to dress formally for dinner and she was glad she had packed the red and black dress, just in case.  It was her best dress, other than the heavy red velvet thing hanging on her arming tree back at Salam-Dir.  She had one blade on her, a small thing hanging off her belt to balance a small pouch, and that was it.  She did not feel as though weapons in this circumstance were a good idea.  Even if she felt more naked without her harnesses and straps than if she was completely naked except for weapons in front of the men on the ship.

Liam took Laun’s hand and kissed it lightly, a raised eyebrow at her lack of crown and jewelry.  Laun thought he was just amused at her choice of clothing, but smiled and let him lead her to one of the chairs.

“I have been told that we have fresh fish and mussels from the river for dinner tonight.”  Liam sat and one of the sailors poured from a wide and flat bottomed decanter into similar glasses.

Laun took her glass and appreciated the thought behind the delicate things that were designed not to tip from the slightly swaying table.  “I am looking forward to it, Liam, though I have to admit that my pregnancy turned me from fish for most of it.” »Read More

The early morning was slightly overcast.  Few people were heading into the Capitol City that morning.  Only one group was on the road out, a few single travelers behind them.

Nesil and Laun rode in silence next to each other, the carriage with Gem, the babies and a few travel cases behind.  There was one soldier with them, the man driving the carriage, but he was dressed in civilian clothes, a cap on his head to cover his shaved head.  Laun was without anything remarkable on her, other than a woman wearing riding leathers, but her baring gave away her status, even with the cap instead of the crown over her hair.  There had been no trouble at the gate and Laun suspected that word had been sent to all the gates to let travelers out without question that morning.

They followed the river downstream along the River Road for more than an hour.  There was a mist that made the overcast morning even grayer, but Laun enjoyed the feeling of the humidity on her skin and the slightly muffled sound of the horses on the gravel of the road.  They came to a wide bend in the road, a smaller track coming off and into a marshy woodland next to the river turning away from the road, or perhaps the other way around.

Liam’s messenger led the way, the newly green trees around them shading the growing morning light from the path.  Grace cantered and tossed her head, not liking the woods, but staying firm under Laun as they followed Nesil. »Read More
