“What do you mean, we have to turn around?”

Laun’s voice carried.  The sharpness.  The pain.  The frustration.  The command tone.

“Highness, our Majesty is in the Royal Estate, which is back to YarsWay and North.  It will only be another hour back to YarsWay.”

Laun signaled to the horse under her and he sat down, letting her off.  She had not used that particular part of the Kell’s Arena training before with that horse.  He was not as finicky as Butterfly’s Grace and had just laid down in the gravel of the road.  Laun stood up and had people at her side as she paced blood back into her legs.

Laun tried to have patience.  She blessed the memory of Lady Hellon and took several deep breaths as the pain that went up her right shin and through her knee lessened.  She tried to have the presence and grace of her Lady as she turned to the Rosemond Captain and said, “How much longer will it take to get to his Majesty, since we can see the walls and gate of your Capitol City?”

Laun had toned down her voice, but the anger was still clearly heard.  The Captain looked over to the Lieutenant of the escort and back to Laun.  “Your Highness, It is only about a four hour-”

He stopped when she had.  She stopped moving.  She stopped looking at him.  She even seemed to stop breathing.

Princess Laun Dresden, Princess Commander of the Third Calvary and the Fourth Logistics and Supply, pulled herself up and looked up at the Captain.  Her voice had softened and her hazel eyes had a flash of green in the brown as she said, “Please, if we could have just half an hour to rest from the road, to water the horses and tend to ourselves, I would be most appreciative.”

He looked at the Lieutenant again and nodded.

Laun started to walk.  She had a small group of people around her, including her own Lieutenant.  She needed to get away from the others, get away from the messenger.  She did not want to completely loose her composure in front of the group, and she did not want to have to deal with blood on her hands.

The baby was crying, again.  Gem was with her, as was Edgar.  Laun had a rage of envy go through her knowing that her children were back home, and that her own Husband was spending more time with Gem’s child-

Laun put her hands on shoulders and leaned into a chest.  She didn’t even know who’s it was.  The tears were thick as they streamed down her face, soaking into the tunic of the man she was using for support.  She wanted it to all just stop.  The travel.  The pain.  The odd attentions.  Not knowing the language.  Being in charge but not being in charge.  She just wanted to be home. »Read More

It was odd seeing what amounted to two horizons as the sun set.

One was the usual horizon, the far trees and perhaps a city in the distance silhouetted by the fading hot sun.  Then there was the unnatural up and down horizon of the cliff face, part of the sun being cut off and making a right angle to the usual horizon in the West.

Laun watched the sun and marveled at the difference in the way things could be seen.  Now that she had just a little bit of information, she saw other things in a different perspective, too.

Gems child had been calm and able to sleep on the last leg of the second day’s journey.  That allowed Edgar to mount and ride next to his Lady and Wife.  Gem needed to get out of the carriage, too, and not just because of her girl.  Everyone was cranky and everyone needed a scrub down from the heat sweat.  She was riding among the military, too, enjoying the fresher air, and the few handsome faces she saw under the helmets.

Laun remembered the look as she glanced back.  Gem’s face scowled fractionally before she dropped back in the pack.  Laun looked in the direction that Gem had and saw the Marquis riding up through the soldiers towards Edgar and Laun.

Laun thought over the last two days and saw that he had been trying to catch her alone, trying to get her attention.  She was now so used to people approaching her that she did not see patterns unless she was actively looking for them.  He had a pattern, and he was weaving another strand in right then. »Read More

The journey into the Rosemond kingdom was hot and dry.  The higher they went up the plateau’s side, the hotter it seemed to get.

Many of those from the Midlands were used to the plains.  Some had been in the Silver Spire Mountain foothills on a mission or on the sides of the old volcano in the North.  This was not like the foothills or the gentle slope of the volcano.  There were resting inns every few miles on the ups and downs, the switchbacks, and just steep places.  They were needed.

The horses were unhitched from the carriages and walked some to keep them from cramping up before letting them have water and feed.  The people also needed to move, both the ones who had been on the horses and the ones who had been confined to the carriages.  Blood was encouraged to flow to places that had been compressed, no one talked to try to keep the pressure headaches at bay.

It wasn’t just the Midlanders who were having problems.  Many of the military escort were used to being at sea level.  The thinner air and the hotter temperatures were hitting them hard with the formal armor and helmets they all wore.  Laun did not envy them.

Laun had been able to take the horse she had spotted at the first inn and had been able to ride him.  Lieutenant Beau had tried to explain to the Rosemond Lieutenant that she was going to do it, without his opposite listening.  Laun kept her military clothing on, looks from the Rosemond Regulars changing from patronizing and haughty to amazed and accepting when Laun rode amongst them without complaint, and without taking the rein of the horse.  She had picked out one of the dark hides that showed lineage from the other continent, and had seen the reaction to a subtle click and hand signal showing it was Kells Arena trained.

Edgar had been offered a horse and he accepted it on the first leg of the trip.  Gems girl started to fuss with the pressure changes and Edgar was the only one who could comfort the child enough to keep her quiet, making it almost impossible for him to ride.  He stepped out of the carriage with the child in his arms, Gem right behind him when the group stopped at the next inn.  The carriage next to theirs was the one with Lady Engrid which was unloading at the same time. »Read More

The Slave Assassin Chapter 2

Back to Chapter one - The beginning of The Chronicles of the Midlands is in The Slave Warrior.

The four masted ship blocked the small harbor.  There was no way the Rosemond ships could get out.

A smaller boat came to the ‘Twilights Gold’ and tied off to the ring next to the rope ladder that had been thrown off the edge.  A hand up and the man was face to face with several dark green dressed men.  He had seen the name on the ship and spoke in the Midlands tongue, only a slight accent to be heard.

“I am Captain Chandrey of the Royal ship ‘Barh Wada’.  Why are you blocking this harbor?”

There were a few looks between the men facing the Captain.  One stepped aside and a smaller figure dressed in Midlands military garb came forward.  The Captain blinked as he heard a feminine, soft voice come from under the sharp cap.

“We are looking for the ship that is taking her Excellency to the mainland.”

It might have been soft, but the tone said much. »Read More

he Autumn had been mild after a hot Summer.  The gardens that Laun was being escorted through showed signs that heat and lack of rain had been hard on the flowers and trees.  Though it was not a delicate bloom that Laun was seeking that afternoon.

There was a small house on the estate in the middle of the gardens.  A few rooms surrounded by well tended shrubs making a maze for those unfamiliar with the paths.  She passed a fountain at one corner, a statue at an intersection and then a bench with the woman that Laun was there to see.

Baroness Fairhaven stood, putting the sewing in her hand by where she had been sitting.  The black dress loosely flowed from her shoulders, the lacings down the front more for show than for fitting.  She held out her hand and Laun took it up, kissing the back of the hand before coming to attention as an officer in uniform Blacks should.  Jessi blushed and waived Laun to her side, starting to walk the rest of the way to the small house.

“My condolences at the loss of your Husband, Baroness.”  Laun’s voice had nothing of sympathy or the sweetness she often heard when others were saying the same words.

Jessi smiled and bowed her head to Laun, saying, “Thank you, your Highness.  It was a blow, but not...unexpected.”  She looked up and the women both had glints in their eyes above the smiles on their lips.

Laun was expected and a small meal was laid out on a small table next to a low, wide couch.  It made Laun smile thinking of what had been done to her on a similar couch, and what she hoped would be happening soon.

The women sat on the couch, Laun taking her leather cap from her head and putting it on a small protrusion from an upright holding the roof over the open area.  Laun took the offered goblet, smiling at the golden liquid.

“I see that you have caught a taste for the Dumonde brew.”

Jessi smiled and Laun saw just a hint of a blush.  “I made the acquaintance of one of the brothers in charge.  He...gifted me with a few casks.”

“All the better for today, Lady.”  Laun looked at her host over the rim of the goblet and they drank at the same time. »Read More

The woman was escorted through the Sand Castle by one of the slaves, the man not used to the dark green tabard newly gifted him.  He pulled on the side of the cloth as he walked in front of the noblewoman.  He stepped to the door of Laun’s bedroom and scratched, opening the door for the noble before going back to wait at the front of the house.

Laun stood and went to her visitor.  Her gold and brown dress flowed from her shoulders, the back open enough to show some of the scaring beneath a sheer veil held to her head by a few pins into her braids.  “Jessi.  I am glad that you made it.  Lucas told me that there have been troubles keeping you from going back to your brother’s mains.  I am preparing to go back to Salam-Dir myself.”

The women embraced as if they were long time friends.  “Laun, the invitation came and I was glad we were still in the Capitol City.”

There were others in the room, talking lightly between them and not raising to leave.  Laun motioned to the chairs by the fireplace and the two women walked to them arm in arm.

Gem was dressed in a dress similar to Launs, the cut and color much more becoming to her blonde hair and light complexion than the dark green and black of her usual garb.  She offered the Lady Jessi a crystal goblet filled with a golden liquid and sat back on the large cushion at Laun’s feet, a children’s book in her hand. »Read More

The glow of the sun on the horizon was all the real light there was on the road.  The way to the tavern was easy to follow with the grasses and shrubs cleared to several leagues from the edge of the gravel road.  Laun had been riding for an hour outside of the walls of the Capitol City, each moment making her just a little more tense.

The Charger under Laun was a good horse.  He was not Thunder, but he followed the motions of Laun’s knees and hands without hesitation.  She was nervous, watchful of the surrounding dark growing around her.  It seemed to be clear, but if she was holding a meeting such as this, she would not have open roads unwatched.

The tavern was huge.  It was several stories, larger on it’s base than the entire inn and greens of Markle and Marie’s place.  There was a large separate structure for the stables, the sound of horses and dogs plain to hear.  Laun directed the charger to the stables and had a flush of fear go through her.

Several large men were standing around the entrance to the stable.  Laun could see glints of brass on some of them, their bells open for those to see who needed to.  Laun moved the charger to one of the step-downs that was there, carefully keeping her dark green hooded cape around her as she dismounted the horse.

“Private gathering.  Fuck off.” »Read More

The Sand Castle was quiet outside the wall.  Inside, military and civilian and slave mixed and mingled and flowed, chaotic if you did not know what the form and flow was.  The gate bell was heard inside and some of the chaos quieted.  The question was said in low tones through the hole, the voice on the other side not having a chance to finish before there was a whoop and the gate started to open.

The front yard was not big enough for all the people who tried to cram in.  Laun had the squad with her and that added twenty to the close to squad number plus mounts already in the gravel area.  Laun had salutes and warriors grips and a few shy kisses as they all crowded in as the gate closed again.

Calls could be heard through the small compound.  Faces appeared at the door, the only one to push through with any success was Disa.  Laun had hands on her, pulling her through the men and into the lamp-lit brightness of the building.

It was as if the Salam-Dir people had drawn lots to see who was to come to the Capitol City.  Hunter was there, waiting until he could get a hug and a kiss before going out to look after Thunder.  Erin was there, Mimi close behind but ignoring the red scarf for the few attentions he could get from Laun.  Silar, dark in dress and skin but bright with his smile, knelt as Laun approached, rising for an embrace and kiss when Laun put her hand on his head.

There were others, mostly waiting in the garden areas.  Lanterns were lit and the small plants had stick walls around them to keep inattentive people from stepping on them.  Laun had a tankard of cold water in her hand and was sitting on one of the benches, surrounded by people before she could really do anything for herself. »Read More

The calls from the men handling the fenderheads were loud, the clanging of chain and the slap of wet rope filling the air as the KingsArrow came into it’s slip in the Capitol City harbor.  The word had already been passed that the military vessel was coming in, a squad of the Princess’ Fourth waiting on the pier for their namesake.

Laun had been preparing for the docking.  She saw that they had caught up with Pebble’s ship by not taking harbor at night.  The three masted ship was being brought in at almost the same time as the Kings Arrow and Laun wanted to use that.  Verat was not sure how it was going to work, to who’s advantage, but could not say no to his Mistress.

A sharp salute came from the men on the pier.  Laun stood at the top of the gangplank, thanking the Captain-Major for the swift journey before turning and coming to a good attention and salute herself.  The men almost snapped their hands down to their sides as Laun brought down her hand, a big smile on her face.

She saw smiles on many of her men’s faces, too.  She was in full Blacks, the cap with the pin straight and sharp on her head.  Concern went across many faces as they saw Gem helping Hazalam to the gangplank, though hesitating going down herself.  There were calls and signals and the squad were instantly making their hands and backs available where they were needed. »Read More
