The Slave Princess Chapter 40

Back to Chapter 39  Please Consider Tribute, the Web Mistress is desperate for chocolate.

The beginning of the Midlands Chronicles starts with Chapter one of The Slave Warrior

Laun’s stomach was growling.  It was almost as loud as Alsen’s snore.

The light from the morning sun was different in the red scarf house.  It was bounced off of other buildings, other glass windows and curtains, to make a faded morning light that showed the diplomatic enclave to Laun.  She had woken with Mimi still wrapped around her.  It had taken a little time to roll to her knees and then get to her feet, and not just because of her sleeping companion on the floor.  Laun’s back still hurt as she sat on the armless chair at the window.

Her Uncles’ rooms had their curtains pulled back and she could see well into the rooms.  There was a sitting room and a bedroom that Laun could see.  There were two figures in the bed at eight bells.  Laun watched, seeing another figure come in and gently put a hand on one of the figures.

Heran sat up and it looked like they were talking.  He shook the figure next to him and Laun saw the Deputy Ambassador to Myrned.  She seemed happy.  There was talking and then she looked around the room.  She seemed to panic, throwing back her blanket and grabbing something from the floor.

Heran was helped into a robe and went to the sitting room.  The servant who had woken him escorted someone in.  They talked for a while as the woman went around the bedroom looking like she was looking for something.  The man Heran was talking to looked towards the bedroom and said something.  Heran gestured and it seemed dismissive.

Laun watched as the romantic drama unfolded.  It was interesting, but it would have been better if she had known all the players.

The woman left, seemingly put-out about whatever she could not find.  Heran talked with the man for a while and then the visitor left.

Heran washed at a basin near his bed and got dressed.  He had a tankard of something in the other room and then turned towards the area of the sitting room Laun could not see.  Laun saw Heran greet someone and then Morse came into view.

Alsen was still asleep.  Mimi had crawled up onto the mattress with him and was seemingly asleep.  Laun turned and looked at the two of them as Alsen snorted and turned over again.

Laun turned back to the window and tried to find Herans window again.  Her eye was caught by the deputy, a level lower and over one from Heran.  She seemed to be getting fully dressed and talking with someone.  She seemed angry.  She kept dabbing something on her neck as she was talking.  She pulled her tunic fully on and seemed displeased as she laced the front.  She turned and made a few motions around her head and neck.  The neckline of the tunic seemed to be displeasing her.

Neckline.  Laun watched as the Deputy Ambassador took a cloth and made a veil out of it, tucking it into her neckline and making sure that her neck could not be seen.

Laun looked back to Morse and Heran.  She saw them drinking something together.  They were talking and laughing.

Laun looked back to the woman.  She had a cord being tied around her head to keep the veil in place.  She seemed more relieved.

Laun watched and looked back and forth for a while.  She knew where the information was coming from to Heran.  They had been looking for the wrong meeting.
